In the Focus on the Family Broadcast “How to find a Good and Godly Spouse”, Gary Thomas states that “a wise marital choice is like a gift that keeps on giving, and a foolish marital choice is like a bad investment that you never get to pay off.”
In summary Gary asserts that Christians today are seeking a Good and Godly Spouse the same way as non-Christians, typically based on the three factors of:
1. Infatuation
2. Sexual Chemistry
3. Compatibility on Dates
However Gary asserts that these three factors are NOT good predictors of a future blessed and successful marriage, here’s why:
1. Infatuation lasts 12-18 months
2. Sexual Chemistry cannot sustain a marriage
3. Date Compatibility only tells you how well you will get along on vacation
Gary then tells us about the six biblical attributes that are better predictors
1. Marry someone that knows how to handle conflict (1 strike and he’s out when it comes to physical conflict)
2. Marry someone that will be a spectacular parent and a Christian
3. Marry someone that knows how to pray (more important than six pack abs), if your partner never talks about God, they don’t have a relationship with God
4. Marry someone that is humble, humility is a preserver of happiness in a marriage and a foundation in marriage, God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble
5. Marry a Giver not a taker, so that when two Givers marry each other, they will give greater to your future children and to God.
3-ways to test a taker
6. Is the Holy Spirit active in their life? Are the fruits of the spirit present in their life? Acts 6:3
Finally read Galatians 5:19-23 to know the red flags that Paul speaks to.
Thank-you Gary for such Godly wisdom!
We pray that heavenlyunions.com can be a part of finding a good and Godly spouse!
