In the Got Questions article “What does the Bible say about being a godly man? | GotQuestions.org” the following characteristics are listed as the following mindsets, behaviors and fruits of the Holy Spirit.
The godly man:
• repents when he sins (1 John 1:9)
• considers himself dead to sin but alive to God (Romans 6:1–4, 11)
• seeks to remain humble rather than exalt himself (Proverbs 27:2)
• is a servant rather than demanding that he be served (Mark 10:45)
• leads by example (1 Timothy 4:12)
• (if married) loves his wife as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25)
• lives in sexual purity, honoring God with his body (1 Corinthians 6:18; Romans 12:1–2)
• seeks to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18; Act 13:52; Galatians 5:25)
• desires to please the Lord more than himself (2 Corinthians 5:9)
• bears fruit for the kingdom of God (John 15:5–8)
Let’s add to this list, maintains a consistent prayer life.
Jesus said in John 10:10 that the enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy. The one thing the enemy of your soul desires to do to you, is to drive a wedge of sin between your prayer life and God.
Remember what happened in Genesis 3:8 after Adam and Eve gave into temptation and sinned against God? They hid from God. When the enemy of your soul succeeds in causing you to sin, the devil is banking on you hiding from God. Have you noticed that if you are engaging in some kind of habitual or willful sin, it becomes extremely difficult to go boldly in prayer to the throne of God’s Grace and Mercy, have you noticed that this sin drives a wedge between you and your intimacy and prayer life with God?
The enemy will use every opportunity to kick you in the teeth, tempt you to sin and when you do, convince you to abandon your prayer life with God. This has been the enemy’s strategy since the Garden of Eden.
Remember brothers and sisters, it’s not how many times the enemy kicks you in the stomach and floors you, it’s how many times you get up off the floor, repent quickly and refuse to concede victory to the devil. There is a battle raging for your soul.
When you refuse to concede victory to sin, but rather get up off the floor and go to your Father in heaven with a contrite heart and repent, our great Jehovah God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us 1 John 1:9, as long as we forgive others Matthew 6:12.
Bottom line folks, we live in a fallen world, surrounded by a godless culture, but no matter how many times the enemy causes you to sin, get up and repent, refuse to concede victory to the devil, because King Jesus already won the war for us all at Calvary.
