Parenting Scripts, the Good, the Bad, And the Ugly
The Generous Husband
Another place we fall back on scripts because we have no clue is parenting. And since we’re not like other parents, our kids aren’t like we were, and times have changed, that can cause problems. I’m not saying we should abandon tried and true principles, but how we apply them may need to be altered. Beyond that, if you have more than one child, they’re not the same, and some scripts that work with one won’t fit others.
Given the complexity and ever-changing nature of parenting, scripts are not nearly as useful or reliable as they are for other relationships. The danger is you find one that works and then slip into autopilot and miss changes in your child or their circumstances that necessitate changes to the script.
Parenting is one of the most difficult things you will ever do and if you’re doing it well there are probably a lot of doubts and concerns far more often than you would like. But even when it looks like they’re working hard to be a problem, they need you and caring for them is one of the most important things you will do in your life. I suggest a lot of discussion with your wife and a couple of trusted friends. Other’s experience is not a substitute for knowing your children, but it can certainly be a powerful help.
